ARC POW-Net (Placements on the WEB & Student Access)
Running parallel to the ARC database software is ARC on the Internet (ARC POW-Net).
This is a system that has been developed to save resources and time for institutions
that have adopted ARC as their main student placement and management system. ARC
Web-Net provides the facility to synchronize key data from the institution database,
with a similar database on a web server. Such details include practice- and theory
placements, annual leave, absence details and any additional information that is
required.
This system allows institutions to collect information from students, practice placement
areas and tutors without wasting the valuable time of administration staff, as well
as displaying day-to-day information that would normally be printed out and posted
or placed on bulletin boards.
How it works:
Because of Internet security and the Data Protection Act ARC has opted for two separate
databases for ARC POW-Net and ARC Windows respectively. This ensures that users
with malicious intent do not have direct access to the main students database as
maintained by ARC Windows. Through the technology we have developed we are capable
of synchronizing the database on the Internet server with the database on the internal
servers on a daily basis with different levels of security and user interaction
that can be custom configured upon installation. This can also be fully automated.
Administration staff, tutors, practice placement area staff, trust members and students
require different levels of access. The system has been designed to take this into
account, and every set of users is catered for differently:
When students log on, they are able to view such information as their own contact
details as held by the institution, their allocation information, their absence
records, which their tutors are and notices posted by the academic institution.
They are also able to inform the administration staff of any detail changes through
an Internet submitted form that could be configured to the institutions needs.
Tutors will see a list of students that are filtered according to who they are link-
or branch tutor to. They will be able to search for students in this list by using
a query form located on their pages as well. Because of security, they will not
be able to see any contact details of any of the students in their list. They will
however be able to request such information and the site will automatically email
it to a registered email address that is located on the web sites database. Tutors
will also be able to see details regarding student placements and absences.
Administration staff will have access to all information in the manner as the ARC
Windows programs as the security is set up from there.
Practice placement area staff will be able to log on and see relevant details about
students attending that placement area and will also be able to request change list
reports for certain dates. Once logged on the staff can also update information
that is held on their placement area so as to save administration staff from doing
this. The system can also be set up to allow the placement area staff to download
statistical information regarding past placements undertaken at that area.
Trust members will be able to see information and progress on students sponsored
by them and updates their own contact details to save administration staff from
doing this.
The web sites are customized specifically for each academic institution and the
data that could be displayed is only limited by what the institution normally requires.
